9 out of 10 men keep their hair with PROPECIA*

Objectives of the 5 year hair growth study were to assess how effective and well tolerated the male pattern hair loss treatment, PROPECIA, is in men with male pattern hair loss.

PROPECIA 5 Year Study

Hair growth 5 year study with PROPECIA

65% of men taking PROPECIA had increased hair counts after 5 years. None of the men taking placebo showed any increase in hair growth. 90% of men showed no further visible hair loss after treatment with PROPECIA for 5 years compared to 75% of the men in the placebo group who did show further visible hair loss.

Finally, the men taking PROPECIA felt more satisfied with their appearance than men taking placebo.

How the trial for male hair loss treatment was done

The 5 year study was an extension of the original PROPECIA clinical studies. At the end of the original study, 1,215 of the 1,553 men taking part stayed on for up to 4 more years, in four 1-year extension studies.

In the original one year study, half the men were taking PROPECIA and half were taking placebo (a placebo pill). Neither group knew which they were taking, real or dummy.

At the end of the first year, the two groups were divided again. Half of the group that had been taking placebo for 1 year was put onto PROPECIA, and half stayed on placebo. And of the group that had been taking PROPECIA for a year half went on to placebo, and half stayed on PROPECIA.

All the men stayed taking whatever they had been assigned for the next four years, except for the group who were switched from PROPECIA to placebo, who were switched back onto PROPECIA at the end of year 3.

* A 5-year clinical study demonstrated the effectiveness of PROPECIA.

  • 9 of 10 men who took PROPECIA had visible results—either regrowth of hair -(48% [134 of 279]) or no further hair loss (42% [117 of 279])—vs 25% [4 of 16] who took a placebo (sugar pill), according to an assessment of photographs by an independent panel of dermatologists.
  • 2 of 3 men who took PROPECIA regrew hair, as measured by hair count. All of the men in the study who were not taking PROPECIA lost hair.
  • A majority of men who took PROPECIA were rated as improved by doctors—77% (210 of 271) vs 15% (2 of 13) of men who took a placebo.
  • A majority of men who took PROPECIA reported that their bald spot got smaller, their hair loss slowed down, and the appearance of their hair improved.
